Smart Quotes version 1.20
⌐ Sam Kington 6th September 1994
This program is freeware, *not* public domain - i.e., I retain copyright.
About this program
******************
This is a small utility to help you make your documents look more
professional, by replacing quotation marks or other combinations of
characters by their more typographically appropriate versions. If you type a
double quote (") or a single quote (') it will replace it by the appropriate
typographically correct quote (open ö or closed ò rather than neutral "). If
you type a ligature (fi, ae, -- etc.) it will replace it by the appropriate
combined character (₧, µ, ù). Finally, it will try and correct typos: if you
accidentally type öSOmething LIke THisò, it will replace it by öSomething
Like Thisò.
There are two parts to this utility: the module SmartQuotes, which
intercepts key-presses and parses them accordingly, and the WIMP front-end,
which provides an easier way of changing settings than entering *commands
(see below). Both of them are very small, but at a pinch the module will work
without the front-end (even though quitting the front-end by default
automatically kills the module).
Mouse clicks
************
There are quite a few things you can do by clicking the mouse on the
Smart Quotes icon, so here is a complete list:
Select Open and close settings window
Adjust Disable and re-enable substitution
Shift-Select Disable and re-enable double quotes substitution
Shift-Adjust As Shift-Select
Ctrl-Select Disable and re-enable single quotes substitution
Ctrl-Adjust Switch between Apostrophe and Both Single modes
Alt-Select Disable and re-enable diphthong substitution
Alt-Adjust Disable and re-enable typo checking
You can also do the following things by clicking on the Close icon of
Smart Quotes' windows:
Select Closes window (standard RISC OS behaviour)
Adjust Settings window: toggles between text and graphics
Other windows: opens Choices directory
Shift-Select Iconises window (standard RISC OS behaviour)
Shift-Adjust Runs !Chars (or whatever application has been set up)
Ctrl-Select Closes all Smart Quotesæ windows
Ctrl-Adjust As Adjust
NB: Because the öOther choicesò window is actually öownedò by a separate
program, Ctrl-Select on its close icon will not close the other windows, and
Ctrl-Select on another windowæs close icon will not close the öOther choicesò
window.
Clicking on the diphthong window will edit the diphthong underneath the
pointer.
See the ReadMe file for more details.
